Members of the Huntington Beach Chapter of Drinking Liberally were polled on May 21, 2019 for their preferences for a Democratic ticket to oppose Trump in next year’s presidential contest. Some results were predictable, and some truly surprising. For example, California’s native daughter Kamala Harris was predictably strong, though mostly as a candidate for VP. Joe Biden finished strongest of all by far, though he may have lost some ground since the poll was taken. Elizabeth Warren shows mounting strength and runs second. The biggest puzzle was how poorly Bernie Sanders fared—just a single vote for VP out of the sample size of forty. Does this anomaly say something about Orange County liberals who haven’t had Democratic representation in many decades? Are they not as liberal as they think? To be learned in the months ahead.
When questioned on whether or not they favored impeaching President Trump, this same group of Orange County liberals were far less decisive, pretty much mirroring the uncertainty of Democrats in national polls:
Yes: 15
No: 12
Undecided/No Opinion: 13
(Note: Sentiment is moving toward “yes” steadily since this poll was taken.)
